Trap the opponent's King in checkmate. White moves first.

Special Moves

• Castling: King moves 2 toward unmoved Rook. Rook jumps over. King cannot be in/through check.
• En Passant: Pawn captures enemy pawn that moved 2 squares past it — only immediately.
• Promotion: Pawn reaches far end → becomes any piece (almost always Queen).

Check / Checkmate / Stalemate

• Check: King is threatened — must escape!
• Checkmate: No escape → you lose.
• Stalemate: No legal moves, not in check → draw.
